The park derives its name from Tarangire River which crosses at its center. Tarangire National Park popularly known as the park of elephants, baobab tree that can handle up to three hundred liters of water and baboons, is located only 114 km, of good tarmac road from Arusha City.
The Tarangire River, from which the park derives its name, irresistibly luring herds of plain migrants to its permanent water during the dry season passes through the area. Between July and November, the park hosts herds of thousands of wildebeests and zebras coming from all over the Maasai steppe and from as for north as the shores of Lake Natron.
Today we drive from Arusha, Tanzania, to Tarangire National Park for lunch. With a permanent water source, the park is virtually guaranteed enormous herds and excellent game viewing including cheetah, lion (some tree-climbing!), leopard and hyena and a herd of 3,500 elephants.
The park is also host to a number of rare species including eland, oryx, kudu and gerenuk. Our accommodations are at Tarangire Sopa Lodge, a tranquil oasis overlooking the rolling plains.
