This 5-day tour offers a discovery of the Comoros Islands, covering local culture in Moroni, volcanic landscapes around Mount Karthala, rural life in traditional villages, and time to relax along the Indian Ocean beaches. The tour takes place mainly on Grande Comore (Ngazidja), the largest of the Comorian islands.
Pick up by the guide at your hotel and proceed for the day’s activities. Take a walking tour of Moroni’s medina, passing narrow alleys lined with carved doors and coral stone buildings. Visit the Old Friday Mosque overlooking the sea, the National Museum, and explore the Volovolo Market for spices, baskets, and local crafts.
Wake up to a sumptuous breakfast. Later set off for an optional guided hike on Mount Karthala, an active volcano and the highest point in the Comoros (2,361 meters). The trek can take 6–8 hours round trip and passes through thick forest, cloud zones, and open volcanic terrain. For travelers preferring a lighter option, a scenic drive around Karthala’s base and short hikes to viewpoints or lava fields can be arranged instead. Return to Moroni in the afternoon for rest.
Begin the day with breakfast and then travel north of Moroni along the coastal road to visit iconic villages like Itsandra, known for its beach and ancient royal tombs, and Mbeni, a center of Swahili and Islamic learning. Stop at Lac Salé, a saltwater crater lake surrounded by dense vegetation, and enjoy a picnic lunch near Chomoni Beach, where black volcanic sand meets the turquoise sea. Return via scenic backroads, passing vanilla farms and ylang ylang plantations.
Wake up to a delectable breakfast and then head towards Mitsamiouli, a quiet fishing town on the northern tip of the island. Visit Dragon Rocks, dramatic lava formations along the coastline, and nearby cliffs with panoramic sea views. Spend time at Trou du Prophète, a tranquil bay said to be a resting place of Islamic explorers. Swim and relax or join a local fisherman for a short boat ride. In the afternoon, return to Moroni with optional stops at roadside stalls or spice plantations.
After breakfast, enjoy free time for shopping or walking along the Moroni coast. Depending on your flight schedule, your guide will transfer you to Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport for your departure.
